On this day in 1533 Henry the 8th’s marriage to Anne Boleyn was declared null and void. She had originally fallen head over heels for Henry who got so excited about marrying her, he started his own church. At the end her head fell over her heels after Henry had her executed by chopping her head off. The last words to come from Anne Boleyn’s head was a line from that famous song, “Another Saturday Night and I Ain’t Got No Body.”
On this day in 1742 the first indoor swimming pool in the world opened in Goodman’s Fields, London. Eight year old William Norburn the 3rd became the first person to be thrown out for peeing in a public pool.
On this day in 1923, the attorney general of the United States, using the full power of his office declared that it was now legal for women to wear trousers. It would take another 80 years for NBA player Dennis Rodman to declare that it was now legal for men to wear wedding dresses.
On this date in 1972, the White House ‘Plumbers’ broke into Democratic Headquarters at Watergate and became known as the ‘Water-gate’ scandal. Besides the fallout which caused Richard Nixon to resign, this event also created a template for lazy reporters who come across a scandal and just add the word ‘gate’ to the end of an incident’s name. This could have been avoided if the Democratic national headquarters had been in the WaterFlumabingen Building.
